Education for Ethnic Diversity

Through a variety of learning experiences the children will be able to explore the contributions of different cultural, racial and religious groups in our society and at the same time broaden their knowledge and understanding of such groups. In this way it is hoped that the children’s awareness and respect for cultural and ethnic diversity in the classroom, the school or the community will be developed.

Drugs Policy

The main emphasis of our work in relation to drugs is the safety of our pupils. This policy is intended to ensure all pupils are supported consistently whether on or around school premises and whenever the school is responsible for their welfare. At Dunston Hill, we recognise that some drugs can have beneficial effects, but we also regard every drug as representing potential for harm. For this reason, all drugs need appropriate and responsible care and management. In order to be able to make informed choices, staff and pupils need to understand the nature of drugs they may come into contact with, their social and legal status and their uses and effects. These choices will include decisions about the use of medicines as well as non-medicinal drugs. It is our aim to help all our pupils to be able to take their place safely in a world where a wide range of drugs exists.

Assessment Policy

At Dunston Hill the key purpose of assessment is to move children on in their learning. Continued monitoring of each child’s progress gives a clear picture of what each child is doing. It is important that the teacher knows what has been remembered, what skills have been acquired and what concepts have been understood. This enables teachers to reflect on what children are doing and informs their future planning. The outcomes of our assessments will help children become involved in raising their own expectations, celebrating their own achievement and increasing their self-motivation.

School Vision

At Dunston Hill, our vision for the future is very much in line with the Council’s plans and we certainly have aspirations to develop a school which is at the heart of the community and offers multi-purpose and extended learning, social and health facilities. Our new school will be ‘housed’ in a state-of-the-art, secure and inclusive building set in attractive grounds. It will serve the diverse needs of the school and local community and be a source of pride to all. Children and adults will be offered excellent educational opportunities and lifelong learning in preparation for the demands of a 21st century society. An extensive range of facilities, resources and initiatives would ensure that teaching and learning are of the highest quality and community links are well embedded in the life of the school.

School Discipline Policy

Aims

• To develop a whole school behaviour policy supported and followed by teachers, parents, children and governors, based on a sense of shared values and attitudes
• By applying positive policies to create a caring, family atmosphere in which teaching and learning can take place in a safe and happy environment
• To teach, through the school curriculum, values and attitudes as well as knowledge and skills. (This will promote responsible behaviour, encourage self-discipline and encourage in children a respect for themselves, for other people and for property)
• To encourage good behaviour rather than to simply punish bad behaviour by providing a range of rewards for children of all ages and abilities
• To make clear to children the distinction between minor and more serious misbehaviour and the range of sanctions that will follow
• To treat problems when they occur in a caring and sympathetic manner in the hope of achieving an improvement in behaviour.

Attendance Policy

At Dunston Hill we believe that children can only learn effectively if they attend school regularly. It is important too, that children arrive and leave school on time. It is equally important that children should not be at school if they are unwell.

As attendance is crucial to effective learning and the continuity of learning experiences school places great emphasis on this in its communication with parents.

Local Educational Visits

Dear Parent / Guardian

Over the course of the school year, the children will be going out on carefully supervised educational visits. Where the visits are during normal school hours and within walking distance e.g. studies of local houses and shops, swimming baths, Dunston Activity Centre, St Nicholas’ Church, Kingsmeadow Comprehensive School etc, you may not be informed in advance and you are asked to give your consent to such visits by signing and returning the attached form.

If the visits are to places further afield and involve transport, then you will be informed beforehand and asked to sign a consent form for each visit.

Parents of children involved in extracurricular activities will be informed in advance of coaching sessions, rehearsals, matches etc.

Internet Access Permissions

Dear Parent/Guardian

Internet and E-mail Parent Permission Form

As part of the school’s ICT programme, we will be offering pupils supervised access to the Internet and their own electronic mail (e-mail) address, which they will retain during their school career.

Pupils will be able to exchange e-mail with partner schools and research information from museums, libraries, news providers and suitable Web sites as part of their learning.

We have obtained our Internet access from an Internet Service Provider recommended by Gateshead local education authority. The provider operates a filtering system that restricts access to inappropriate materials.

Before being allowed to use the Internet and e-mail, pupils must obtain parental permission. We would be grateful therefore if you could complete and return the permission form below.

Yours sincerely

Administration of Medication Policy

Medicines should normally be given to children at home. Even a medicine to be taken three times a day could be before school, immediately after school and at bedtime. Exceptionally, it may be necessary for a child to take medication on a regular basis whilst at school, but more likely it will be “as required. Only in specific cases should “over the counter medication be brought into school, and this must be with the prior approval of the Headteacher.
